This miniature for trumpet takes its name from the landform you see in the distance in the video above. Pedernal is an iconic mesa outside of Santa Fe, near Ghost Ranch — the home and studio of American painter Georgia O’Keefe.
I have visited Pedernal many times in my life — it is mysterious and majestic, just as in O’Keefe’s painting of it. It was pure coincidence that drew Mary to record in this location, and yet, this vista was the perfect framing for the piece — reaching out into the vast natural world, and hoping to find our calls reflected back.
